Ice Axe
Jon led Miles on a number of grade III ice climbs in the Cairngorms. As true climbing partners, Miles and Jon are equally dependant on each other for their safety.
Tying Knots
Miles had to learn how to safely handle all the climbing equipment in the howling winds and sub-zero temperatures of the Cairngorms.
Snow Hole Shelter
Miles and Jon learned how to dig and survive in snow holes in preparation for the future expeditions to the Himalayas.
In the snow
The lofty heights and icy ridges of the Cairngorms was a new environment for Miles to get used to.
It also presented new challenges for Jon as the guide.
In a hole
Miles had not expected to fall through a hole in the snow in the Cairngorms but it was a useful learning experience in preparation for the crevasses he would encounter in the Alps.
Descent
After a long day in the Cairngorms, Miles and Jon descend towards Glenmore Lodge.
When descending in snow it is often easier for Miles to be guided from behind and held on a short rope.
